Jae Liu is from the Republic of China and I am in awe of his beautiful grasp of light and colour as well as his superb line quality. He deserves a lot of attention. Visit his Deviant art site!

Viktor & Rolf are among my top 5 favourite designers along with Lacroix, Lagerfeld, Galliano and McQueen. I marvel at the way they can easily shift from elegant, formal tailoring to innovations so conceptualized they edge on the absurd. One thing is for sure though; this Dutch duo takes the cake for some of fashions most memorable moments. Now the masters of surreal and distorted construction are currently the subject of a retrospective exhibition at the Barbican Art Gallery in London. On Sunday, I had the opportunity to visit the gallery. Altogether the exhibit was impressive and well conceived. Garments were displayed on life sized figures with large doll heads, giving the darkened rooms a bit of an uncanny feeling. Matching smaller dolls with miniature versions of the outfits could also be viewed around the exhibit and housed within a large dramatic dollhouse in the center of the main room.
Photography was strictly forbidden and unfortunately I was not brave enough to do any stealth photography myself but I found a couple of images of the dollhouse here and here. Also there are some nice pictures of the construction of the event here. For those in the London area the Barbican Gallery hosts several fashion industry workshops be sure to check out their schedule! The show runs 18th of June - 21 of September tickets are £8/6 Watch the video here! Posted under ( Blog Journal ) by coco on 07-15-2008 | Comments ( 2 )
I came across Swedish born Johanna Ost for the first time while researching 18th century costume and then again more recently when one of her vintage creations caught my eye. Her wardrobe is to be envied as is her inspired eye for putting together a look that captures an era perfectly. Delving deeper into her website I discover that she is also a talented artist, her delicate line drawings inspired by fairytales, the circus and fashion are ever so charming and imaginative. If you are interested to see more please check out her blog located here. For those interested in 18th century French fashion she also has a costume blog here.
Her art website is located here
And finally her flickr page is worth checking out here. What a talent! Posted under ( Artist Showcase ) by coco on 07-12-2008 | Comments ( 2 )
While I am on the topic of Alexander McQueen, I came across some interesting patterns lately that might be of interest to other McQueen fans out there. First up is a lovely modern kimono pattern courtesy of Showstudio. Having been earlier tempted to put in a bid on the exact Kimono top before being snapped back to reality by the $2,000 price tag I can’t tell you how excited and to try this pattern.
Here's a picture of the outfit in McQueens Fall 2003 Show
The second project is a Fall 2005 rendition of a sweater created by Calista on her site 'Handmade by Calista'. She only has a few knit patterns for sale but it's worth a look for knitters out there. Unfortunately I am not a knitter but considering I love knits and this looks like a cute pattern I might give it a go.
